Sawyer Surgery Clinic History

The doctors of Sawyer Surgery Clinic have been providing the people of Enterprise and the surrounding area with general surgical and endoscopic care for over twenty years.  The founding partners, Drs. Dan and Sam Sawyer, are brothers, both born and raised here in Coffee County.  After completing surgery training at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham, Dr. Dan returned to Enterprise and opened his practice in 1984.  Dr. Sam joined his brother in 1986 after completion of his residency at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans.  Our third partner, Dr. Sherry Roach, came aboard in 1991 having completed her training at the University of Tennessee.  All of our doctors are board certified by the American Board of Surgery.

As general surgeons, they treat a broad range of illnesses.  Through their extensive endoscopic practice, they diagnose and treat GI and colon diseases that would alternatively have been seen by a gastroenterologist.  The doctors do more than 900 colonoscopies a year, both for diagnosis and removal of polyps, and for routine American Cancer Society-recommended screening.  They have been performing laparoscopic gallbladder surgery since 1990, averaging more than 250 cases a year.  One of the busiest parts of their practice is the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.  Image-guided biopsies, breast conservation surgery, mammosite placement, sentinel lymph node biopsy, chemotherapy vascular access – these are all common procedures in their breast practice.  All three doctors are members of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, dedicated to quality, current Breast Cancer care.  No other surgeons in Southeast Alabama are presently American Society of Breast Surgeon fellows.

In addition to these illnesses specifically mentioned above, the surgeons handle many other surgical and medical problems, including major surgery for cancer of the thyroid, esophagus, stomach, intestine, colon/rectum, lymph nodes, and skin (including melanoma).  The doctors also offer operative management of gastroesophageal reflux, all hernia repairs, and medical and surgical treatment of hemorrhoids and other rectal problems.  Minor surgical procedures such as skin cancers, moles, and vasectomies are performed in office with major surgeries done at Medical Center Enterprise.
